Tree & Shrub Pruning

Pruning is truly an elite arboricultural skill set. It takes years of experience and education to become proficient.

Trees and woody shrubs are living entities. Great care and consideration need to be applied when implementing pruning processes. A complete understanding of how the specimen will react to the pruning cut is imperative.

An understanding of tree biology, tree species, and pruning objectives is a requirement to facilitate long term results.

The professional arborists at Brothers Tree Service have been educated in this manner, which is why they are uniquely qualified to perform such tasks.

We meet or exceed all standards set forth by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the Tree Care Industry of America (TCIA)!

Benefits of a regular pruning schedule:

-Safety to people and property

-Health and wellness of trees and woody shrubs

-Aesthetic appeal for your property

-View enhancement/ maintenance

-Proper clearance from utilities and structures

PRUNING SERVICES

Natural Pruning -  is the selective removal of branches following the tree’s natural branch structure and growth habit.

Ornamental Pruning - is pruning performed primarily to enhance a tree or shrub’s aesthetic appearance while maintaining plant health. This may include shaping, thinning, heading, or size control to complement landscapes, architectural features, or design goals.

Topiary Pruning - is an intensive ornamental pruning technique in which plants are regularly trimmed into defined geometric shapes, figures, or forms. It requires frequent maintenance and is typically applied to species that tolerate repeated cutting and dense foliage growth.

Pollard Pruning - is a cyclical pruning system where a tree’s upper branches are cut back to the same points (pollard heads) on a regular schedule. When initiated on young trees, it controls size, encourages dense regrowth, and reduces risk of large limb failure if maintained correctly.

Fruit Tree Pruning - is the strategic removal of branches to improve fruit yield, quality, and accessibility. This method focuses on optimizing light penetration, air circulation, structural support, and directing energy toward productive fruiting wood.

Retrenchment Pruning - is a staged, long-term pruning strategy used to reduce the height and spread of mature or declining trees. It mimics natural aging processes by encouraging lower, secondary canopy development, thereby reducing mechanical stress and extending tree longevity.

Antique Apple Pruning - the specialized pruning of old or heritage apple trees, emphasizing preservation rather than productivity. The approach prioritizes structural safety, gradual restoration, deadwood removal, and maintaining historical form while avoiding excessive stress on aging trees.

Bonsai -  is the highly controlled and precise removal of shoots, leaves, and roots to maintain miniature tree form while preserving the illusion of mature, full-sized trees. It involves both structural pruning and fine maintenance pruning to control growth, proportion, and aesthetic balance.

“Time spent amongst trees is never wasted time.
